It all kicks off with the traditional Deniliquin RSL Sub-branch ANZAC dinner at the Deniliquin RSL Club Saturday.
Special guest and speaker on the night is Brett Beatty, who was enlisted with the Royal Australian Engineers in 1992 and served until being discharged in 2019.
Mr Beatty started as a Reservist, and became a qualified Combat Engineer in 1993.
Once qualified, he furthered his training leading to promotions to Lance Corporal, Corporal and then Sergeant, after which he was transferred from the Combat Engineers to a Non-Corp posting with Sydney University Regiment as an instructor of officer cadets.
During his service Mr Beatty was involved in a number of activities, which included the Northern Endeavour 96 on the Tiwi Islands, building infrastructure for the army field hospital and Operation Gold 2000, providing security for the Sydney Olympic Games.
He also participated in flood and fire assistance deployments, and Operation Resolute 2015-16 - a domestic operation working with the Navy and Border Force to secure Australia’s borders.
He is a recipient of the Australian Defence Medal, Defence Long Service Medal with two clasps, Operation Service Medal, ACT Emergency Service Medal and Australia Day Medallion - for dedication, commitment and leadership to 5 Combat Engineer Squadron.
The Anzac events continue Sunday with the inaugural Diggers Charity Golf Day at the Deniliquin Golf Club.
The ANZAC challenge is a four person ambrose, with participants encouraged to register as team Australia, New Zealand or another country of choice.
Registration and payment will be taken on the day, before 11.30am. Entry is $25 per player, and it will be a noon shotgun start.
Each member of the winning team will receive an Army/Navy glass set, with runners-up receiving an Army metal goblet or Army decanter.
There will be a military memorabilia display at the golf club, and Diggers Day ANZAC Raffle.
Tickets for the raffle are $5 each, with proceeds supporting military study in local schools.
On Anzac Day itself, there will be five commemorative services, the traditional Gunfire Breakfast and a luncheon following the mid-morning service.
The timetable is as follows:
5.45am - Participants in the Deniliquin dawn service march are asked to assemble outside Deniliquin Newsagency to march to the cenotaph, for the 6am service.
6.30am - Gunfire Breakfast at the Deniliquin RSL Club. $5 per person.
8am - Service at the Deniliquin War Cemetery.
8.30am - Dedication of the RAAF No. 7 Service Flying Training School memorial at Deniliquin Airport.
9am - Wanganella Anzac Day service.
10.30am - Participants in the Deniliquin mid-moning service are asked to assemble at Deniliquin Town Hall for a 10.45am march off to the Deniliquin cenotaph.
11am - Deniliquin Anzac Day service. Followed by a luncheon in the Deniliquin RSL Club’s Dunlop Room (upstairs). The cost for the buffet lunch is $10.
