One of those is Cooma Cricket Club’s women’s side, which, after a difficult few years out in the middle, is looking to take a step forward this year.
New captain Stacey Lothian, who has made the jump from Shepparton Youth Club United after rehabbing a long-term injury, has taken the reins, and along with returning coach Russell Napier, is hoping to usher in a new era for the side.
The club is in recruitment mode for the new season, welcoming talent to supplement its current roster.
“We think we've got enough for a team, but we want to try and get some extras and some new people who either have never played before or who have played in the past and want to come back,” Lothian said.
“We want to get some more players out there to make a really successful team if we can.”
Cooma went winless in the new-look Goulburn Murray Cricket Women’s last season, after the departure of the four Cricket Shepparton sides in the previous off-season.
The competition consists of Twenty20 and 35-over matches, primarily played on Sundays.
Lothian said any new players were welcome in the open-age side, even those who aren’t available every week.
“We've got a young group of girls looking to really develop their skills and learn together, and it's a very supportive and inclusive environment,” she said.
“Russell and I are both up to the challenge of helping the girls develop their skills as much as we can and hopefully getting a bit more success than the last couple of seasons.”
The club expects to begin twice-weekly training sessions about four to six weeks before the season begins in October.
