Cutters felled convincingly in lower-table clash

Lachlan Carmody kicked two of Mathoura’s four goals in a comprehensive defeat to Blighty.

What appeared to be a golden opportunity going in never eventuated for Mathoura, as its senior football side was well handled in what was hoped to be a competitive Picola District Football League contest.

The Timbercutters and opponent Blighty had only bested Katunga this year and sat as the league’s bottom two and the clash was expected to be a hard-fought one between the strugglers.

Unfortunately for Mathoura, it never really got out of the blocks as Blighty kicked five first-quarter goals to open up an 18-point lead by quarter-time.

A respectable 2.2 scoring effort from the Cutters in the first term was cut off in the middle quarters, the side only adding three behinds across the second and third terms.

Meanwhile, the host continued to find its way into good areas and cashed in with goals, posting 14.10 (94) by the end of the third term.

Mathoura tacked on another couple of goals in the fourth, but it was far too little too late as Blighty recorded a huge 19.11 (125) to 4.5 (29) victory.

The Timbercutters will now likely finish on the bottom of the ladder unless they can cause the upset against Jerilderie or Berrigan in the final fortnight.

Mathoura faces off with the Demons, at home, on Saturday.
