The Mowers’ youth girls suffered their first defeat of the year in surprisingly comprehensive fashion, while the club’s women’s outfit was also downed by Shepparton United.
Undefeated this season and rolling through sides generally by big scores, the Mowers were stunned at the weekend 15.10 (100) to 0 by leading contender Shepparton United.
The Demons controlled the game from the outset, kicking three majors in each of the first two quarters to go up 41-0 at half-time and adding another nine in the second half to rampage to the result.
Two unlisted players led the way for Shepparton United, kicking five and four goals respectively.
Moama is still secure in the minor premiership position, but will need to turn this result around quickly as it heads into the finals series in about a week’s time.
The Mowers have one more opportunity to hone their skills before the post-season, taking on Cobram at Moama Recreation Reserve in the final round.
Women
It was a more positive performance from Moama’s women’s side despite also being defeated by Shepparton United, as the Mowers came closer to the unbeaten league leader than earlier in the season.
The Friday night game at Wanganui Oval in Shepparton was in the balance until the final term, although the Demons led from wire to wire.
It looked like another dominant 50-point performance, like in round two, might be on the cards, as United held Moama goalless in the first half, leading 3.2 (20) to 0.2 at the main break.
The Mowers got on the board after the break, kicking two majors to one in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two goals and open the door for a potential fightback.
However, the Demons would recalibrate in the fourth and close out the game, 6.2 (38) to 2.3 (15).
Matilda Cooke and Lily Hillman found the goals for Moama, while Payten Johnson kicked three for the Demons.
The Mowers will finish the season in second, wrapping up their regular season at home to Cobram on Sunday.
