Benalla Racing Club’s first meeting for 2025 saw some spectacular racing, with the bumper nine-race program providing a brilliant trackside atmosphere for the Kids Day Out on Sunday, January 19.

Training trio Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin got off to a winning start in the Fraser Jeffrey Finance Maiden Plate, which saw Everythingisautumn claim the win over 2100m by a head from Brydan.

Race two was the start of a special day out for jockey Zac Spain, claiming the first of four wins for the day aboard the Ken and Kasey Keys-trained Art Critic in a tightly contested 1200m race.

The Danny O’Brien/Zac Spain connection worked well at Benalla at the weekend, teaming up for a win with Baby Hazel (left) in race three.

Spain backed it up immediately with a triumph in race three for trainer Danny O’Brien, taking the win with three-year-old filly Baby Hazel by half a length over the 1100m, before teaming up with O’Brien again in race five, as Runaway Soul took the win by three quarters of a length from Dalroshio.

Spain topped off a brilliant day by taking his fourth win, for Echuca trainer Dennis Oliver, in the Riverbank Farm 0-58 handicap over 1400m, steering Boulder Jack to the win by half a length over the Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained She Flys.

Geelong trainer Chris Calthorpe had a winner with Might Just Happen in race four, with jockey Ryan Hurdle urging the five-year-old mare across the line to win by a nose, while Ballarat trainer Mitch Freedman was also on the board, with A Dime Approach taking out race six by a length.
Graham, ridden by Milos Bunjevac and trained by Aileen Vanderfeen, wins race seven at Benalla Racing Club’s Kids Day out.

Bendigo-based trainer Aileen Vanderfeen celebrated with six-year-old gelding Graham, steered by Milos Bunjevac to win by a length in race seven, while Wangaratta trainer Ben Brisbourne capped proceedings with Sydney Gal saluting in race nine, winning by three quarters of a length.

The racing keeps coming at Benalla, with the club set to go again on February 2 for Sunday racing, while the Benalla Toyota Farmers Day Out on February 16 promises to be another cracking meet.
