Tongala gives Moama the blues

Tongala made a bit of a statement in Murray Football League action on Anzac Day, comfortably brushing aside Moama by 50 points at Moama Recreation Reserve.

Entering the clash Moama had come off a bye after splitting its opening two games, while Tongala had a losing record after falling to a narrow defeat to Echuca United at home.

Clearly disappointed by its round three loss, Tongala came out with a point to prove and blitzed Moama by kicking four of the game’s first five goals to take a 10-point lead into the first change.

The Blues booted the first major of the second term before the Magpies struck back with two quick goals, forward Dean Galea willing his team back into it, but that resurgence was short-lived as Tongala finished the half with three straight goals to lead 8.6 (54) to 4.3 (27) at half-time.

A goal for the visitors early in the third quarter opened up a 34-point lead that started to seem unassailable for Moama to overturn, though the Magpies finished the period stronger, kicking three of the next four to only trail by 20 entering the fourth.

Perhaps revved up by some words at three-quarter time from coach Jordan Souter, Tongala upped its forward pressure in the final quarter and immediately crushed any hope of a comeback for the hosts.

The Blues kicked five majors in the fourth, their best quarter on the night, while only conceding a solitary behind the other way to run out 15.10 (100) to 7.8 (50) winners.

Victory for Tongala means it has a 2-2 record after four games, placing it fifth on the ladder, while there may be some cause for concern for the Magpies, currently sitting ninth after a second successive home defeat.

A trip to Nathalia is up next for Shannon Keam’s side, while Tongala will serve a bye in round five before welcoming Deniliquin to Tongala Recreation Reserve.
