Deadly tropical storms and monsoon batter Philippines

At least 15 people have died in floods and landslides in the Philippines after more than a week of heavy rainfall.

Thirteen people were injured and at least six people remained missing as several tropical storms and the southwest monsoon continued to bring heavy rain across the Southeast Asian country, police said on Monday.

The deaths were primarily recorded in the provinces of Benguet, Rizal and Batangas on the main island of Luzon.

Nine people died in landslides or mudslides, while two were electrocuted, three drowned and another was struck by a falling tree.

More than 750,000 people have been affected by the severe weather nationwide, according to authorities, with more than 8000 forced to seek shelter in evacuation centres.

Numerous roads and residential areas around the capital Manila were also flooded, with water reaching waist height in some parts.

Schools were closed in many places due to the flooding, while ferry services were also disrupted in affected regions.

The coastguard said operations had been suspended at 20 ports in the central and eastern Philippines.

The country's weather service forecast further heavy rainfall.
