Magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocks Indonesia

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has hit Indonesia's West Java area at a depth of 118 kilometres.

The country's geophysics agency BMKG said the quake, which struck on Saturday, has no tsunami potential.

The quake was felt in the capital Jakarta.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Authorities in Garut, a town some 50km from the epicentre, said they were carrying out checks.

Some residents of Bandung, the capital of West Java province, said on social media they felt strong tremors.

It is the second significant quake to strike Indonesia in the past month.

More than 300 people were killed after a shallow, 5.6-magnitude quake hit the town of Cianjur, about 75km south of Jakarta, in November.
