His contractor Alex Peacock, from Peacock Transport & Hay Contracting at Rochester, said the whole process, from planting to harvest, had to be done in a timely matter.
"The whole process has to be done right and you've got to have a bit of luck with the weather," Mr Peacock said.
"It's not just baling, you've got to have the timing of planting and cutting right.
"It's hard to just give one tip.
"If the crop's not right, the hay is not going to be right."
Mr Peacock, who has done contracting work for the Fannings for more than 10 years, said this was not Mr Fanning's first victory in the awards.
"Frank’s won a couple of times now and he does the job very well."
