For those who won’t use their water allocation by June 30, there are a number of options available.
Customers are able to keep some or all of their unused water allocation and take it into the next irrigation season as carryover.
G-MW water delivery services general manager Warren Blyth said carryover was a valuable tool for customers in managing their water allocations.
“It means that the unused allocation is available to use or trade without the need to purchase, and secures access to water at the start of the next season,” Mr Blyth said.
“Carryover is available to water entitlement holders on the Campaspe, Goulburn and Murray systems, the Bullarook and Loddon systems, and the Broken system. Each system has slightly different rules to match their specific entitlements and hydrology.”
Carryover is also available to groundwater entitlement holders and is limited to a percentage of the licence volume in each area.
Customers who have unused water they wish to carry over must ensure the water is linked to a water share, limited term transfer of a water share, or supply by agreement before June 16.
Agriculture Victoria will hold an online webinar in regards to carryover on Thursday, April 29 at 1 pm, titled Securing your future water needs: Harnessing carryover and other water products.
G-MW river operations manager Andrew Shields will be one of the presenters during the session.
Customers may also sell unused water by finding a buyer or using a broker or solicitor to find one; online trades must be submitted by 5 pm on June 30 2021.
Relinquishing water is another option, returning unused allocation to the consumptive pool.
Applications to relinquish water must be submitted to G-MW by June 24 — or 5 pm on June 30, 2021, if the application is made online.
