A 2.5m-long powered quilting frame is operating five days a week, offering a finishing service and advice for quilters across the Goulburn Valley.
Murchison Neighbourhood House manager Jenny Lister said the large machine was purchased in 2019 after three years of fundraising by Needle and Thread Group members.
It was hoped the frame would provide a new business venture to support the future of the community house. However, the liquidation of Murchison Community Care in 2019 and the subsequent debate over the building's sale, followed by the onset of pandemic restrictions, put a halt to operations.
Now, with the sale of the building to new owners, the start button has been pushed on the quilting service.
Mrs Lister said patchworkers from around the district and from Melbourne were travelling to use the machine to finish their quilts at an affordable price.
“Fees are charged by the hour and they include the option of guidance and supervision by a tutor or having the work done for you,” Mrs Lister said.
She said an average sized quilt could be finished on the quilting frame for $50.
Bobbins, cotton and other items are also for sale at Murchison Neighbourhood House, in Impey St.
“After the trials and tribulations of the past few years, we're now on the way to develop this further and really start pushing this as a new business venture,” Mrs Lister said.
