While lamb prices dropped after record highs at Bendigo recently, it was Shepparton’s turn for high prices at Friday’s weekly sale.

The Shepparton sale topped at $250/head for a pen of 15 offered by A. Furlanetto, from Lemnos.
Elders Shepparton livestock agent Andrew Kyle said the yarding was lower due to Monday’s public holiday and the time of year.
‘‘Often we don’t have a sale on the Friday before a public holiday,’’ he said.
‘‘Numbers are quiet at this stage of the year and will be until spring.’’
While prices did not hold from the $260/head for supplementary-fed Merino lambs and $250/head for wethers at the May 20 Bendigo sale, the yarding was up at the June 3 sale due to this week’s public holiday that saw Shepparton numbers drop.
‘‘Lamb (up 4768 to 17768) and sheep (up 2071 to 5071) numbers both increased, drawn out by the high prices and yesterdays public holiday that will cause a fortnight’s break in selling,’’ the June 3 report read.
‘‘The sale lacked the competitive punch of a week ago, with export and domestic buyers not prepared to chase as hard to fill orders.
‘‘Prices backed away from the record pace of a week ago, with most crossbred lambs $15 to $30/head cheaper. Isolated sales were up to $45/head lower.’’
The report said it should be noted that the previous market had enjoyed price surges of up to $50/head.
