This French children’s book follows different city residents harvesting food from their gardens.
There is new produce every time the seasons change and we get a different inventive recipe every second page.
A Year in Fleurville is both not a recipe book and not a straight story. It feels like an artsy gardening guide meant for metropolitan libraries.
The recipes are pretty adventurous. The Tzatziki dip on the page about cucumbers is my favourite.
All the recipes are clear and simple, designed for children to follow. There is Butternut Cake in autumn, where kids can lean to simmer pumpkin in milk over low heat; and Lemony Bean Dip in winter, where cannellini beans are soaked in water overnight.
My favourite section is the one about Pear and Ricotta Pancakes, where the illustrator included both a Pink Floyd and Bluey reference. Something for all ages.
A Year in Fleurville by Felicita Sala, is published by Scribble, RRP $27.99.
