Field day will look at cereal and canola trials

By Country News

Riverine Plains will host the Evan Moll Gerogery Field Day on Thursday, November 7 from 11am to 4.30pm.

Host farmer and Riverine Plains committee member Daniel Moll said the key aspect of the day would be the inspection of cereal and canola varieties sown as part of the Grains Research and Development Corporation National Variety Trials.

“The NVT trials provide a great opportunity to look at new varieties before their commercial release, with the cereal NVT session being led by Peter Matthews (NSW DPI) and Don McCaffery (NSW DPI) leading the canola NVT discussions,” Mr Moll said.

The event will provide an opportunity for farmers to discuss this season's issues as well as next year's.

Adrian Clancy from Grain Brokers Australia and Lachlan Herbert from Riverina Oils will provide an update on cereal and canola grain markets.

Andrew Milgate from NSW DPI will speak about the new stripe rust strains affecting Trojan, Scepter and similar varieties, as well as next year's implications.

A presentation about oaten hay agronomy options will also be made by Peter Matthews from NSW DPI, while David Leah from Seed Force will lead a paddock inspection of a new and quicker maturing Seed Force winter grazing canola.

Waratah Seed Company and Sydney University will unveil the new dual-purpose triticale variety Kokoda, with grain quaility suitable for beer production.

The field day will start with a pasture agronomy session at the Leah family property, 338 Fielder Moll Rd, Gerogery (north of Albury).

At 12.30pm the field day will move across the road to the Moll family property Elderslie, 167 Fielder Moll Rd, Gerogery for the cropping agronomy session and free barbecue lunch provided by Seed Force.

“The day is always strongly supported by the local community and we encourage farmers to come along for what will be an informative and social day,” Mr Moll said.
