A few years ago, artists Tank and Steve Tobin met at the Longwood Pub.
They shared beers, laughs, a love of art, and a general interest in large-scale metal sculptures.
Today, they share a business in sculpture, a passion for recycling materials, and occasionally they can be seen in matching shirts.
I’m not entirely sure if they share them, but it is Tank and Tobes, and they are a one-of-a-kind duo, so who really knows.
Over the past few years, the pair’s large-scale sculpture business that goes under the banner Tank and Tobin Sculpture Works, has been popping up across the region.
You may have seen them already, given they’ve been the subject of plenty of conversation.
They’ve had multiple exhibitions, and recently some of their work was showcased at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
It’s safe to say that whether they’re wearing matching shirts or not, their work is getting noticed.
“We had a great time and got an awesome response from the visitors that attended,” Tank said.
“We sold a couple of our bird sculptures and made some great contacts for the future.”
Alongside their larger sculptural works, the pair is constantly creating art for the home.
So, if you’ve flipped in from the back of the mag and this is the first thing you’ve seen, welcome — you’re getting the first look at what they’ve got coming up.
Smaller bird sculptures for the home, specialised bird baths, and creative bird feeders, are all made from recycled materials, but with a bit of a Tank and Tobes twist.
They also love putting their own creative spin on custom-made pieces.
“We’ve been busy doing a lot of custom-made pieces from wood stacks to tree guards, garden seats, bird feeders and baths, and garden arches,” Tank said.
“We are always up for a challenge too, and enjoy people reaching out with special requests, like working with unique or treasured metal components, transforming them into something clients can cherish and admire in their gardens.”
Their smaller bird sculptures have become a popular backyard addition in the region, with clients saying they have become a statement and talking point in their outdoor spaces.
So, if you’re looking for something unique for your home, best you reach out to the guys on their socials or by calling 0407 043 913 or alternatively head into Tank's Art Gallery on 175 Corio St, Shepparton.
“We’re happy to talk with anyone about their ideas to brighten up their garden, so give us a call and add some unique art to your space,” Tank said.
You never know — you may be lucky enough to see the pair in their matching shirts upon art delivery too.
Either way, you’ll end up with a talking point in your garden and a story to go with it.
