Authorities issued an emergency warning about 3pm on Tuesday for people to leave the Coles Bay Road area at Friendly Beaches if safe to do so.
"The fire danger rating is severe. Fires under these conditions are expected to be uncontrollable and fast-moving," the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) said.
The fire, which is travelling east towards Friendly Beaches from Coles Bay Road, is about 20km north of the entrance the picturesque Freycinet National Park.
TFS acting regional chief Greg Butters said three aircraft and a number of crews were fighting the blaze.
"The wind is the main issue for us ... the relative humidity is fairly low as well," he said.
Much of Tasmania was buffeted by strong winds on Tuesday, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of gusts up to 125km/h on the east coast.
Mr Butters said the state's parks and wildlife service was working to evacuate campers from the area.
Swanwick and the town of Coles Bay are expected to be at high risk on Tuesday evening, with a watch-and-act alert in place.
Guests and staff at nearby Freycinet Resort have evacuated, while people have gathered at the designated Coles Bay boat ramp "safe place".
Kristen Floyd from the Devils Corner Winery at Apslawn told the ABC the area had been blanketed by thick smoke.
"It's quite windy here as well which is making it a lot scarier," she said.
Mr Butters said weather conditions were expected to ease on Tuesday evening, with the possibility of rain.
"It is unusual for the bushfire season to start this early, it is purely because of the dry conditions over winter," he said.
Police have closed Coles Bay Road from the Tasman Highway to Swanwick Road.
