Teen terror accused has 'limited access' to lawyers

Lawyers for a teenager accused of preparing a terrorist attack against former federal opposition leader Peter Dutton have complained of "frustrating" limits on access to their client.

A boy then aged 16 was arrested in 2024 and accused of the commonwealth offence of committing acts done in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act.

He was accused of researching and testing homemade explosives while allegedly planning an attack between May and July, 2024.

The teen's case was reviewed in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday.

His barrister was seeking to have longer conferences with their client so they could take his instructions while he was in custody at a youth detention centre.

"We do have two conferences scheduled. We are negotiating with the detention centre to get more time. It's very frustrating but we are doing our best," the teen's barrister said.

The teen in April last year was committed to stand trial.

He was on track to stand trial over 10 days starting on June 15, Justice Lincoln Crowley heard.

Justice Crowley ordered the teen continue to be held on remand and set a review of the matter for May 12.

Mr Dutton was leader of the federal Liberal Party and Coalition opposition until he lost his seat of Dixon, north of Brisbane, at the May 2025 election.
