IDW Ayrshire competition

The first day of breed competitions at International Dairy Week took place in Tatura on January 21, and featured Australia's National Ayrshire Show.

Dairy week director Brian Leslie said the Ayrshire show was probably the biggest held in the country for the breed.

“It’s the best Ayrshire show we have ever seen,” he said.

Mr Leslie said the competition level was high.

“The breeders have brought in their best teams; there was tremendous depth across the entries.”

Ipswich breeder Kevin Smith was named Premier Breeder after cows he had bred won both grand champion and intermediate champion titles.

Mr Smith said this was a tribute to his father and grandfather who had put so much work into the breed over the years.

The grand champion, owned by the Wilson family, was sold last year for $13 000 and had never been shown before.
