Tellurian Fruit Gardens owner Ant Wilson took home an award in the Earth category for his organic certified fruit in the Delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards 2020.
Mr Wilson was nominated by Bendigo's Masons restaurant owner Sonia Anthony, who he has previously sold produce to.
“I don’t do what I do for recognition, but it was a pleasant surprise, it was nice to be nominated without knowing,” Mr Wilson said.
“I sent in the last variety of nectarine for the season, and a couple of early season pear varieties.
“There was a judging date and I had to send a small amount of produce down by that date, I didn't expect to win because some of my better produce grows earlier in the year, such as cherries.
“I think it's really nice that small scale producers have won awards and are in the limelight, bringing attention to so much diverse food in agriculture in Australia that’s easily accessible.”
Mr Wilson started Tellurian Fruit Gardens two years ago after taking over an existing orchard, Mount Alexander Fruit Gardens.
He is a member of the Harcourt Organic Farming Cooperative, selling his produce through Community Supported Agriculture and farmers markets.
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Wilson has continued to sell produce through the Castlemaine Farmers Market cooperative stall, after implementing safety precautions.
