In a year that’s been ravaged by the economic and social impacts of COVID-19, this is especially pertinent.
Berrigan Shire’s 2021 Australia Day Awards is expected to be the first official event held within the shire after lockdowns and border closures, and endeavours to shine a light on the individuals and groups that have helped keep our community forging ahead during uncertain times.
There are four awards categories for which locals are encouraged to nominate candidates that deserve recognition for their contribution to the region – Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson/Sports Team of the Year and Community Organisation of the Year.
Berrigan Shire Council assists the local Australia Day Committee to host the Australia Day awards each year, which next year will be held at the Finley Recreation Reserve.
Mayor Matthew Hannan says the awards are a fantastic way of recognising those who have gone above and beyond for their community over a number of years.
‘‘Our communities have shown extreme resilience to work through the COVID-19 pandemic, and being able to acknowledge some of our residents on Australia Day is something we look forward to,’’ he said.
‘‘This year the ceremony returns to Finley with preparations already underway, and we look forward to seeing many of our residents on Australia Day.’’
