Bega chief executive officer Paul van Heerwaarden said the transfer was a natural result of a change in throughputs at Tatura, as cream cheese products were taking a larger share of milk volume.
‘‘The butter production had declined significantly,’’ he said.
The transfer would also enable the company to consolidate its manufacturing footprint with the newly acquired Koroit factory.
Mr van Heerwaarden said Tatura would continue to make single serve butter packs that were popular with the food service industry, which carried the ‘Tatura’ label.
He said Bega would continue to expand the nutritional business at Tatura and was also developing the organic and goat’s milk lines.
He said no permanent jobs would be lost at Tatura due to the transfer of the butter line.
Tatura Milk has been making butter for just over a century.
