Chance to take off to Belgium

The 2022 Australian Young Breeders School team – Torumbarry’s Georgia Sieben, Cohuna’s Kaitlyn Wishart, Courtney Afford (SA), Stanhope’s Nathan Hart and Andrew Gray (SA). Applications for the 2023 team close on April 26.

Applications for places on the five-strong Australian team set to compete at the 21st Young Breeders School in Battice, Belgium in late August, close at 5pm on April 26.

This will be the third time an Australian team competed at the Young Breeders School, with the first team attending in 2019 and again in 2022, after the two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Building international networks within the industry is just one of the many benefits of being part of the Australian YBS program, according to 2022 Australian team member, Cohuna’s Kaitlyn Wishart.

“The YBS is an incredible opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge while building valuable networks with like-minded individuals from all around the world, It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can generate incredible future opportunities,” Ms Wishart said.

Backed by Holstein Australia and Jersey Australia and a growing number of dairy industry businesses, applications are open to 18 to 25-year-olds planning a future career in the dairy industry.

As well as competing at the school, the Australian team will take part in an educational tour through Holland and Belgium.

The five-day event, run by the Association Wallonne de l'Elevage, involves hands-on workshops including bedding, showmanship and clipping, as well as classroom-based sessions such as marketing and herd promotion.

After three days of workshops and practice, participants put their skills to the test in stock judging, showmanship and calf classes.

To be eligible for the trip, applicants must be able to travel between Saturday, August 26 and Friday, September 8.

Team members from 2019 and 2022 are ineligible for the 2023 team.

Applications should be made via email to jersey@jersey.com.au by 5pm, Wednesday, April 26.
