The Moira Shire Neighbourhood Watch facilitated the meeting, with Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy attending to discuss the need for the 24-hour police station.
“This is an issue going way back to 2004 when Victoria Police were debating whether to build a new 24-hour station in Yarrawonga or Cobram,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Unfortunately, there isn’t a 24-hour station in either town, with the closest being Wangaratta and Shepparton.
“I tabled a petition in Parliament in 2017 with 900 signatures on it to try and force the government’s hand and have been pushing ever since.
Mr McCurdy said that under Labor's governance, vital front-line services are being steadily eroded, leaving the community vulnerable.
“We are unlikely to see them open a station to 24 hours when they are trying to get rid of our one-man stations.
“This debate continues to roll on, yet the Government refuses to listen.
“I encourage locals who are passionate about this to write a letter to the editor expressing their concerns.
“Community safety is paramount, and it is time for the Government to prioritise it in regional areas where police stations are few and far between.”
