Dookie ag science day

Secondary students with an interest in agricultural science careers visited the Dookie campus of the University of Melbourne campus last week.

The years 11 and 12 students have already indicated an interest in sustainable agriculture and in finding out what courses are available to get started in a career.

At the Dookie campus, the students were shown technology to detect water stress in crops using drones, recently commercialised microwave weedkiller technology and they got to see the robotic dairy that automates milking and cow health monitoring.

The dairy has 105 milking cows in the herd, operating on about 30 ha of pasture and also feeding off about 15 ha of sorghum.

The cows are averaging 25 litres a day, with some producing up to 37 litres.
