“The overwhelming majority of our customers do the right thing and pay their bills,” G-MW business and finance general manager Michael Gomez said.
“G-MW has a responsibility to these customers to keep our business sustainable, and debt recovery is a crucial part of this.”
G-MW offers a multi-phase debt recovery program, which includes various options for customers experiencing financial difficulties.
While most customers use these options some have been in debt for a prolonged period or have neglected to seek help paying their debts.
G-MW has sent long-term debtors a letter of notice informing them it will take legal action if they do not pay debts or enter into a suitable payment arrangement.
“Where customers are experiencing financial difficulties, we work with them to find a solution,” Mr Gomez said.
“Our customers are always offered discounts for early payment, instalment options and customised hardship plans.
“We make every endeavour to contact customers through reminder notices, phone calls, letters, emails, SMS and in person.
“If the customer has still not paid, we suspend their supply and contact the customer again to try to make arrangements for payment of outstanding debts.
“If there is still no arrangement, we will take legal action.”
Mr Gomez said G-MW continued to drive efficiencies that helped it pass on benefits to customers.
“In 2020-21 we reduced prices by an average of 10 per cent, and our 2022-23 price increase is well below the consumer price index of 5.1 per cent,” Mr Gomez said.
“In October last year, customers with delivery shares above 0.25 Ml/day received water shares that had an estimated market value of about $300 million.
“Later this month, customers with delivery shares below 0.25 Ml/day will see a credit on their fixed charge bills.
“When we have a sustainable system, everybody benefits.
“Through strategic improvements like those made as part of the Connections project, and through ensuring every customer pays their fair share, we are guaranteeing the system remains sustainable.”
