Local government is a creation of state legislation and if the regulator is incompetent and complicit, as revealed by the NSW Auditor in a scathing report last year, then we, the ratepayers, suffer both unnecessary costs and loss of services.
As someone who relocated to Edward River for employment and remains an investor in affordable housing for retirees and service workers, I was scandalised at the time when the former mayor was left in a position of begging for NSW Health to undertake its basic regulatory duties at ratepayers’ expense.
This lack of service provision is not realised by fellow citizens and bureaucrats in Sydney, however, I have never forgotten how much the ERC community needs capable leaders to assert their rights.
As a councillor, my role is to listen, advise residents of realistic outcomes, and deliver policy solutions that staff are properly resourced to deliver.
As an ‘outsider’ with no real estate or business interests beyond a single property, I have no affiliations and can independently assess any and all representations made to me without any bias.
The last administration wasted too much time and money on covering up failure, avoiding accountability and sowing unnecessary division.
This is something a well-informed councillor group can improve, and I hope to offer my expertise in governance to help my fellow councillors to deliver for the ERC community.
