Meet top stallions, experience historic property at Darley parade and open day

Darley Australia sales manager Lisa Manning said there would be a “strong group” of seven stallions standing at Northwood Park this year.

“Ghaiyyath is always a major draw card. He was crowned the world’s best racehorse and is a very impressive horse to see in person,” Ms Manning said.

“Cylinder is another exciting one. He was a top-class sprinter and won the Group one Newmarket Handicap.

“We are also looking forward to introducing Observer to people. He is a dual Group one winner, having won both the Victoria Derby and Australian Guineas, and it will be his first season as a stud.”

While the annual event offers breeders and industry players the opportunity to see the Darley roster up close, Ms Manning said it would also be “an enjoyable afternoon” for all.

“It is open to everyone. There will obviously be breeders and people from within the industry attending, but we would also love to see local families, racing fans and anyone who has an interest in horses,” she said.

“You certainly do not need to be an expert or know a lot about breeding to come along and enjoy the day.”

During the open day, attendees will be able to hear about the Darley roster, meet some of the people who work with the stallions every day and tour the Northwood Park facilities, which has a great history with horses that goes back more than a century.

“In the early 1900s, the property was developed as a horse and cattle farm by AG Hunter, a well-known racing and trotting figure,” Ms Manning said.

“The 1925 Melbourne Cup winner Windbag later stood at Northwood Park and is buried on the property, with a headstone still marking his resting place.

“The history makes it a special place, but it is also a working thoroughbred farm today.”

The 2026 Darley stallion parade and open day is free to attend, and all are welcome to come by, learn about the horses and experience the beautiful property.

“We would love to see the local community come along,” Ms Manning said.

“Northwood Park is part of this community, and it is important to us that local people feel welcome here.

“We hope plenty of people take the opportunity to come out and enjoy the day with us.”
