Nervous wait ahead for towns, as swollen rivers and creeks continue to rise

Cobram sits on the banks of the Murray River and has avoided significant flooding for now; however, residents in the area are being advised to monitor the VicEmergency app for any changes, as the situation across the region remains fluid.

Despite the lack of physical damage, the recent flooding across the Murray Valley has had a cost for both Cobram and the cross-border town of Barooga.

The Cobram Show, which was supposed to return after a two-year, lockdown-enforced hiatus, was cancelled and both the popular Thompson’s Beach Cafe and the footbridge at Bullanginya Lagoon have been cut off and flooded.

The Katamatite-Nathalia Rd between Numurkah and Katamatite, which is a key transit route between Shepparton and Cobram, has been closed due to water on the road.

The town of Numurkah, located 35km south of Cobram, is in a much more precarious position, with the Broken Creek full and a ‘watch and act’ warning in place.

Local authorities are not taking any chances and have set up a sandbagging area.
