Shepparton police Sergeant Kayla Warwick urged drivers to ensure their headlights were on whenever they drove in the fog, to enable them to be seen by other drivers.
She noted that many newer cars had an ‘automatic’ light setting, but said that it did not necessarily turn lights on during daytime fog.
“Those with automatic lights should double-check that their lights are turned on,” Sgt Warwick said.
“Make sure your lights are actually on, and not just the interior lights.”
Sgt Warwick also warned people to be careful when driving in fog – especially when it was a heavy fog like Shepparton experienced on Tuesday, June 23.
“Being in a rural area, there are a number of hazards that aren’t seen, so make sure you drive to conditions,” she said.
Police recommend that drivers should always allow extra space between their vehicle and the one in front whenever visibility was impacted.
And if drivers can’t see, police recommended they pull over in a safe location until the conditions clear, and use their hazard lights to be seen.
While police say drivers should always use headlights in the fog, they advise against using high beams, as they can create glare in the fog.
