Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said they drove through 2 m of water in the Perricoota State Forest, flooding the car before calling for help.
“Don’t drive through flood waters, people do die,” he said.
“We rely on community organisations such as the volunteer rescue association or the SES to give up their time and put their lives at risk to come out and rescue you, because of your foolish decisions.
“You’re assuming a log hasn’t washed down onto the road, you’re assuming the road is still there and hasn’t diverged – you might be driving off the road.
“Insurances of vehicles also get completely void; so, if you’re driving your $60,000 vehicle through flood waters, your insurance will be null and void.”
Insp Huggett said people should turn around and find an alternate route, or call off where they’re trying to get to altogether.
“You do not drive through floodwater under any circumstance,” he said.
Insp Huggett said the incident on Wednesday night took police off the road for three to four hours.
“They put their lives at risk and the volunteers at risk who came to save them.
“It’s ludicrous that people chose to drive through that water.”
