But Shepparton United product Oscar Ryan has finally broken through for his AFL debut, and it was worth every bit of the wait.
Ryan has plied his trade for Adelaide’s SANFL outfit since being taken with the 27th pick of the 2023 AFL National Draft, but the classy defender has dug in and done the work for his shot at the big time.
His wait finally ended after the Crows called on the 21-year-old for the round 21 clash against Essendon at Marvel Stadium, debuting as Adelaide’s 276th AFL player.
After a strong 2026 State league season, Crows fans finally caught a glimpse of the star Goulburn Valley export, and he didn’t disappoint.
A proud contingent of family and friends watched on as Ryan tallied 19 disposals at a silky efficiency of 89 per cent as well as eight score involvements and three tackles.
But the crowning glory? Slicing through four Bombers players, Ryan launched a shot at goal from the 50 in the third quarter, sailing through for his first major.
“I was actually watching Brodie Smith highlights before the game so that’s probably where I got it from,” Ryan said to Crows media post-game.
“I didn’t know what to do, I just saw the lane and took it, and luckily enough it went through.”
Adelaide went on to win by 72 points, and while acknowledging the fast-paced nature of the topflight, Ryan said it was a good feeling to get his chance.
“It felt really good, I’ve worked a couple of years for it,” he said.
“(It’s been) a lot of work; Smithy (Brodie Smith), Junior (Wayne Milera), have been helping me throughout the whole three years, Lairdy as well.
“I thank all those boys.”
Leading the team down the race alongside fellow debutant Archie Ludowyke after the final siren, Ryan linked up with his teammates and a special guest to sing the club song.
“It’s very special,” he said.
“I’m thankful to the club too, they’ve let 20 of the closest people to me in here.
“Dad luckily enough got to the song – I don’t think he knew any of the words.”
Ryan has arrived – and he doesn’t want to stop there.
“I knew internally I could do it, but actually doing it felt pretty good,” Ryan said.
The win has catapulted Adelaide into the top four, and with the full breadth of Ryan’s skill set now apparent, is there a part to play for him come finals time?
