Dear Justin,
you were loved by so many, and many thought you were too indestructible for this to happen. Your leadership, toughness and resilience was legendary amongst the Nightcliff Rugby League club past and present players, the club that you loved, Chicko Motlop summed it up by saying you were one of the tougher, better players. You also had a caring personality, willing to help others, and many NTFRS firefighters that went to Nhulunbuy for relief purposes, told me how much you welcomed them, including Salty, and Wayne and Nicky Green who visited Nhulunbuy, to mention a few. Going by the great honour that the people of Gapuwiyak bestowed upon Justin (and another rugby league legend, Mundy Niki, was the police constable at Gapuwiyak, who stayed with Justin and cared for him, and was on duty when the helicopter landed and first on scene) was the fact that the community escorted the ambulance with Justin's body to the airport to bring him home, with a slow march of proper sorry business, Yidaki clap stick ceremony which is normally not done for Balandas, That reflects how much Justin was loved across Arnhem land. Mundy said the old people came straight to the police station and started singing for hours. The Gould family especially thank Mundy for what he did for our son, including the helicopter pilot who managed to land safely. Justin, you had a great job that people only dreamt of, flying all over Arnhem Land for all those years, respected and loved wherever you went. You are a great loss to all of us. It hurts a little less by knowing that you are now together with your beloved mother, which helps with the grief of a double loss of my 2 loved ones.
Rest In Peace. Love always, Dad
