FOLEY PE, Father Peter

Father Peter Foley PE was ordained a priest at St Mary of the Angels Basilica, Geelong, 21 July 1962. After his ordination, he served as Assistant Priest Geelong Parish (1962), six months on loan to All Saints Parish, Portland and then St Patrick’s Cathedral (1963) and St Johns East Melbourne (1964). He was then appointed Assistant Priest at Braybrook (1967), Hastings (1970), Essendon (1973) before his appointment as Parish Priest of Albion Parish (1974). Fr Peter was secretary to the Infirm Priests Sustentation Fund, the predecessor of today’s Priest’s Retirement Foundation. He was involved as the employer’s representative on the Victorian Catholic Schools Association and the Principal’s Arbitration Board. Fr Peter was appointed Parish Priest of Belmont Parish (1985) where he remembered for his leadership and initiative shown in the transfer of the whole Belmont Parish to a new site and the development of new facilities. Fr Peter served Belmont Parish until his retirement in 2011, where upon he was appointed Pastor Emeritus. Fr Peter died on Tuesday 28 April 2026 at Star of the Sea Aged Care in Torquay, aged 90 years. He will be remembered for serving God’s people and his fellow priests with a joy and generosity and the Archdiocese acknowledges his pastoral care and spiritual guidance for over 64 years.
