Ahmad, 39, was shot dead on the street at Greenacre at 9.30pm on April 27 in what police described as another brazen and callous murder in Sydney's ongoing gang wars.
The 49-year-old man now charged over the crime was originally arrested during a police operation at Campsie on May 2 when detectives uncovered 25kg of methylamphetamine (ice) with an estimated potential street value of more than $22 million.
Officers also seized $200,000 in cash and cloned number plates.
The man was charged with several drug and criminal group offences and remains before the courts.
Task Force Erebus investigators laid two additional charges on Friday - one count of accessory before the fact to murder and accessory after the fact to murder.
Ahmad was slain six months after being released from jail after serving five years for the manslaughter of gangland rival Safwan Charbaji.
He had been warned by police his underworld enemies had placed a $1 million bounty on his head.
His brother and crime kingpin Walid "Wally" Ahmad also died in a hail of bullets while sitting at an outdoor cafe at Bankstown in 2016.
NSW Police will allege in court the charged man was involved in planning Ahmad's murder.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Jason Weinstein expects more people to be charged over the slaying.
"Our allegation is he is not the shooter but he undertook acts that allowed those persons to do the offence that they did," he told ABC television on Wednesday.
"So what we're saying is that he was complicit in that homicide."
In the last 18 months, more than 20 people have been charged over four homicides linked to Sydney's criminal underworld.
"We have a dedicated team currently of 80 investigators who are certainly looking at homicide investigators looking at the tit-for-tat war homicides which are occurring as we speak," he said.
The charged man remains in custody and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday.
The development comes just a day after former Lone Wolf bikie Yusuf Nazlioglu died in hospital after being shot in front of his wife in a car park at Rhodes in Sydney's west.
There have been 14 fatal gangland shootings in Sydney in the last two years.
Task Force Erebus was established to investigate several fatal shootings and criminal activities by organised crime networks across Sydney.
