The tournament got started on Friday, June 5, and will run until June 19, but already a strong contingent of local representatives has reached the knockout stages.
The mixed pairs competition has advanced the furthest, with three local duos progressing through sectional play to the knockout rounds.
Moama’s Cassandra Millerick and Kevin Anderson made the round of 64 before falling, and the other all-Steamers duo of Emma Simmonds and Paul Girdler made the knockout round of 128.
Peter Campbell added to Moama representation, teamed with Queenslander Melissa Roberts to reach the round of 128, and fellow Steamer Matt Robertson, paired with Leanne Poulson, did the best of the local players, reaching the round of 32.
The men’s singles and both gendered pairs have listed draws for the knockout rounds, with more Moama talent qualifying.
In the men’s singles, Cameron Keenan, Anderson, Robertson and Girdler are through to the elimination stages.
In the pairs, Girdler teamed with New Zealander Geoff Short to qualify, while the duo of Robertson and Campbell are also among the knockouts field.
In the women’s pairs, Millerick and Simmonds have teamed to reach the elimination stages.
Fours, under-18, and multi-class events will start either later this week or early next week.
