Mathoura cut down by Tigers

Mathoura held its own with Katamatite in the first quarter.

Mathoura remains winless in Picola District Football League, but will take heart from an impressive opening quarter against league heavyweight Katamatite last Saturday.

The Tigers were convincing winners on the final scorecard at Katamatite Recreation Reserve, 21.8 (134) to 5.8 (39), but the first quarter was a different story, a resolute Mathoura rising to the occasion.

Both sides kicked one goal in the opening term and, after some back-and-forth action, Mathoura found itself down by two 8-10, at quarter-time.

Katamatite seized control after the break and romped to victory, but in a season of incremental improvement the Timbercutters will feel good about their efforts in the opening stanza.

Five goals also represents a decent output for Mathoura and Clinton Atkinson and Bordy Watts kicked two majors apiece.

Still among a winless bottom four, Mathoura has an even more difficult contest ahead, preparing to take on the 8-0 Katandra back at home at Mathoura Recreation Reserve.

This weekend, Mathoura host Katandra at the Mathoura Recreation Reserve.

Senior football begins at 2.05pm and A-grade netball from 1.30pm.
