“She reads me, she knows when I need her by my side and I can rely on her," Julie-Anne said.
On the flipside, Julie-Anne keeps a close eye on her best buddy for a different reason.
“She was diagnosed with epilepsy at just 10 months old,” Julie-Anne said.
This South Australian born antique enthusiast can be found in her whimsical garden, complete with fairy lights, butterfly garden and a tree swing, on the banks of the Bullinginya Creek — an anabranch of the Murray River at Barooga.
Julie-Anne’s two sons, Jock, 20, and Finn, 16, have spent eight years being adored by Lucy.
As well as keeping close eye on Julie-Anne, Lucy is a talented possum spotter, keen player of fetch, duck herder and Bunnings lover.
According to Julie-Anne, Lucy’s love of fetch and zoomies keeps this active border collie content.
However, it’s a trip to the Bunnings fertiliser aisle (in a trolley nonetheless) that is her seriously happy place.
“The smells send her mad with happiness,” Julie-Anne said.
Lucy has a part-time job mustering the pet ducks, Annie the appleyard and Mrs Duck, the Indian runner, into their duck house.
Lucy is an avid possum spotter.
“She’s also a talented possum spotter. If I find her standing there just staring up, I know there’s a possum,” Julie-Anne laughed.
The pair share a close bond, relying on each other during the tough times and enjoying the beauty of reliable companionship.
