Fears for town’s hospital

Alexandra residents have opposed the Victorian Government’s plans to downsize their hospital.

Streamlining the management of regional hospitals has raised serious concerns for Alexandra residents after a town hall meeting on Saturday, June 29.

The event was organised by the Alexandra District Traders and Tourism Association and attracted 280 locals and a further 1220 views on its online stream.

The meeting opposed the Victorian Government’s plans to merge the number of regional hospital boards, downsizing from 76 to 12.

Shadow Minister for Health Georgie Crozier spoke at the rally as well as Murrindindi Shire Mayor Damian Gallagher and State Member for Eildon Cindy McLeash.

Local businessman Andrew Embling said a major concern was Alexandra being cut off from hospital services following natural disasters.

“When we had the fires here and the floods we got blocked off from Melbourne and our hospital was absolutely full treating patients,” Mr Embling said.

“We are going to have another disaster, and if we don’t have the services available, then what’s that gonna do?”

Ms Crozier told Country News the lack of transparency from the government was a major concern.

“The health department refuses to out anything down in writing,” Ms Crozier said.

“And all health staff have been gagged.”

Similar meetings were held in Seymour and Yea during the past two weeks.
