Strathbogie Shire Council has awarded a demolition contract for the historic Chinaman’s Bridge near Nagambie, with works set to begin next month.

West Pacific Group was awarded the contract following a tender process, with structural assessments confirming the timber bridge has deteriorated beyond repair and poses safety and environmental risks.
Council has secured a Heritage Victoria permit allowing works to proceed under heritage conditions, which include preserving identified features of the bridge alongside demolition and riverbank rehabilitation.
Mayor Scott Jeffery said the decision followed years of investigation.
“While council recognises the bridge’s historical significance, expert assessments have confirmed it can no longer be safely maintained,” he said.
“This project will remove an unsafe structure, protect the environment and preserve important elements of the bridge’s history.”
The $1.31 million project is funded through the Council Flood Support Fund, with works expected to be completed by summer.
Council said the bridge’s historical importance would be preserved during its removal.
